Google X lab is developing a smart contact lens that can measure glucose levels in tears using a small wireless chip and glucose sensor that are embedded between two layers of soft contact lens material. Professor Sae Kwang Hahn and his colleagues at Pohang University of Science and Technology in Korea have made a smart contact lens and eyeglass combination that could be used to monitor diabetes and dispense drugs on-demand. When tear glucose levels rise, the smart contact lens relay this information wirelessly to the eyeglasses, which light up in case of abnormally high sugar levels.
The Tellspec Food Sensor is a handheld device that can scan food at a molecular level. The three-part system–a pocket-sized spectrometer, a cloud-based analysis engine, and a mobile app–work together to scan foods and identify calories, macronutrients, and allergens.
